The Books of Blood combine the ordinary with the extraordinary while radiating the eroticism that has become Barker's signature. Weaving tales of the everyday world transformed into an unrecognizable place, where reason no longer exists and logic ceases to explain the workings of the universe, Clive Barker provides the stuff of nightmares in packages too tantalizing to resist.

Never one to shy away from the unimaginable or the unspeakable, Clive Barker breathes life into our deepest, darkest nightmares, creating visions that are at once terrifying, tender, and witty.

The Books of Blood confirm what horror fans everywhere have known for a long time We will be hearing from Clive Barker for many years to come. This first volume contains the short stories "The Book of Blood," "The Midnight Meat Train," "The Yattering and Jack," "Sex, Death, and Starshine," and "In the Hills, the Cities."

The Books of Blood Volume 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Clive Barker Simon Vance Dick Hill Peter Berkrot Jeffrey Kafer Chet Williamson Chris Patton Crossroad Press Books

This is an absolutely excellent collection of short stories by one of my favorite authors. Of course, some of the stories in this volume are stronger than others, but that is to be expected of any collection of short fiction. My favorite story in this volume is "The Yattering and Jack" which is a tongue-in-cheek tale of a contest between an average everyday mortal and the demon sent to tempt his soul to damnation. It is hilarious and perverse and I have probably read it about ten times. The Midnight Meat Train is a spine chilling horror story about a man who falls asleep on the subway and wakes to find the other passengers butchered and hanging from the handrails. Very tense and gory, with an ending that will blow your mind. In the Hills, the Cities is a dreamlike story about two competing villages who strap themselves together into mountainous figures to do ceremonial combat. It great because it's so bizarre and original. The other three tales are worth a read, especially Pig Blood Blues, but didn't affect me as much as the three I mentioned previously. If you are a horror fan and have not read the Books of Blood, do yourself a favor and pick up all six volumes. They are cheap and well worth the price.

The Books of Blood Volume 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Clive Barker Simon Vance Dick Hill Peter Berkrot Jeffrey Kafer Chet Williamson Chris Patton Crossroad Press Books Reviews

I love words. Words can be manipulated into sentences, sentences into paragraphs , paragraphs into story's. There is nothing better than a well written story, except a awesome well written story. Clive Barker is a Genius with words, he makes you see, so what are you waiting for? Go get this book!!! I recommend to all fans of modern horror!!!!!
Part the first of Clive Barker’s short story collection aptly named The Books of Blood. The dead have stories to tell, but rather than scribing their tales on paper they carve their stories upon human flesh. Volume 1 consists of five very different short stories which are sure to please most fans of the horror genre. If a Lovecraftian tale starring a subway serial killer is your bag, than look no further than ’The Midnight Meat Train’. In the mood for comedic horror? Try ’The Yattering and Jack’, the story of a lesser demon who is just not terribly good at his chosen vocation. I suspect volume 2 will be finding a home on my eBook Shelf very soon.
I currently own at least three different editions of The Books of Blood, a hardcover omnibus, the recently released eBook editions, and the also recently released audiobook versions. At one point I'd had the original US paperback releases, but I believe those are long gone now. I nearly bought the original UK hardcovers, with cover illustrations by Barker, but my bank account at the time was small, bills were large, and they were a bit out of my reach back then.

I say all this to let you know I'm a fan of Mr. Barker's work, and when the audiobook editions were released, I jumped on them to check out some old friends given new life by the narrators. Simon Vance, who does a great job narrating Ian Fleming's Bond novels, is the perfect voice for "Sex, Death, and Starshine." There was a dusty quality to his reading that spoke of the end of a dream, letting go of something already long forgotten by the world. "In the Hills, the Cities" was one of the first of Barker's stories I read, and it was a revelation at the time. Performed by Chet Williamson, he managed to bring the the towering figures of the giant cities to terrifying life, and the true relationship of the two main characters to light, two men who are sexually compatible, but otherwise not made for each other. My favorite of these tales, though, was and has always been "The Yattering and Jack." Narrator Dick Hill accurately captures the seemingly quiet and befuddled patience of the protagonist, while conveying the glorious frustration and rage of the Yattering, the demon who tries desperately to engage and capture him.

The remaining stories, "The Book of Blood," "The Midnight Meat Train," and "Pig Blood Blues" are all enjoyable tales of horror and gore. But I've run out of time, and will let you discover them yourself.
There are a couple of incredibly riveting, well-executed stories in this compilation, and then there are some stinkers. The ride, in and of itself, is one worth experiencing and indeed I recommend this'll to Hellraiser and General horror fans. If I had to pick a favorite it would be probably be the Yattering and Jack. And the worst? Probably, worst is the wrong term to use here, and rather, derivative seems better. In any case, the last story whatever it was titled was the least captivating and the least "credible" (for a 'horror' book).
A classic in modern storytelling and something that any fan of the genre should read. A textbook to madness.

Short and sweet. Clive Barker erupted onto the scene in 1984 with his "Books of Blood" series short stories. And the world changed.

Published between 1984 and 1985, 30 short stories/ novellas split between six volumes. Each story, so fluid and gorgeous, poetic and bleak, involving and revolting, fun and terrifying. Mr. Barker is amazing at dissecting and manipulating the human condition.
I read the 2013 re-release of Volume 1, and the tales actually hit me a bit harder then when I read it in high school nearly 20 years ago. Back then I was hit by the gore and the scares, now I was hit by the same plus the intimacy and the underlining eroticism that I couldn't have understood as a boy. It's the tone the Mr. Barker has built a phenomenal, multi dimensional career out of. Sex synonymous with death. Beauty in terror.

I believe that this release immediately cemented Barker as a master of language and horror. Your library is incomplete without "The Books of Blood"
